Unboxing Designerbox 31

Posted by Shop Oryx Info on

Our final subscription to Designerbox:German born designer Sebastian Herkner is the genius behind Designerbox #31.Moitié, french for midway point or halfway through, is the namesake of this elegant two-tier setup in ceramics. A simple looking dish, emcompassed by a well thought process, Herkner left the function of this object ambiguous, open to interpretation for the user. A young designer with an elaborate portfolio, he has designed for multiple manufacturers including ClassiCon, Dedon, Fontana Arte, La Chance, Moroso, Pulpo, Rosenthal and Very Wood.

To Sebastian, active participation in the process is vital in understanding materials and pushing them to their limits. Only by ironing out manufacturing details can a design be transformed from paper to 3D. His philosophy is not guided by any trends or consumer date, but by an appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. He believes in the importance of passing these know-how to future generations.

One particular design that stood out for us is an outdoor chair - Banjooli. It is inspired by the flapping wings of ostrich displayed during courtship dance. Each chair is hand braided by experts in Senegal using colourful fish yarns. The overarching organic shap is distinctive in this design.

His formula for design :

Simple Technique + Traditional Material = Contradictory Interesting Object
